Learn 'How to Learn'!

My dear grandson - you have turned eighteen! Today is the first day of a new chapter in your life. You only have one more year as a teenager, when your age number ends with 'teen'. You have turned 18 but always remember that your parents will never stop nagging and telling you what to do!

Even if your parents still want to treat you like a kid, be assured that the government will treat you like an adult. Now that you are awash with 18th birthday wisdom, you are responsible for making your own life decisions; but you can trust that your teachers and elders will still be watching over you.

This is the time to dream big, set the world on fire, and make your life as exciting to live than it is to remember. You do not necessarily have to follow the roads that others have made. Though homo sapiens emerged around 300,000 years ago, there are so many new things yet to discover by charting your own path through life!

The only thing you have to make sure is that the chosen path is firmly rooted also on the non-material aspects of life - on the cultural, social, moral, and spiritual values, meanings, and purposes. Two years of life in United World College, Pune campus have already prepared you to understand the cultural diversity within the community and the world.

You have friends with customs and festivals from other faiths and nations, and you are familiar with food, art, music and dances from different communities and cultures. In your present college, you'll be learning several new subjects and acquiring lot of knowledge.

Your university education at Oklahoma University, Norman will prepare you for a world of rapid change in technology, increasing interconnectedness, and new forms employment. When you were 8 years old, the number of connected Internet of Things (IoT) surpassed the population on this planet (7 billion) and by this year, 50 billion devices and objects will be on IoT.

So remember that in a continuously changing vibrant world, in order to keep your learning, skills, and competencies relevant, what you have to learn is 'how to learn'. That is, you need to become an agile learner, to be able to adapt and learn new things quickly in a fast-changing environment.

Wishing you a memorable and momentous birthday, my dear grandson!
