Using Facebook in The Future

With the change of the company's name to Meta, several things are going to happen to Facebook and other products. American science fiction writer Neal Stephenson introduced the term metaverse in his science fiction novel Snow Crash, published in 1992.

Metaverse means a virtual-reality space in which users can interact with a computer-generated environment as well as other users.

This means Facebook will become a 3D space where you connect with your friends on the Internet using your Avatar in virtual space. An Avatar in Hinduism is the manifestation of a deity in bodily form on Earth. In the metaverse space it will be a 3D object of yourself (your character / persona), which youngsters are already using in computer games.

The two main technologies that will shape this 3D space are Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). VR will immerse you in experiences using expensive headsets; your perception of reality is completely based on virtual information. AR can be accessed with a smartphone and offers you an interactive experience of a real-world environment. You'll use your sense organs - eyes (sight), ears (sound), nose (smell), skin (touch to feel movement, pain), but not yet tongue!

So you'll be teleported (enter) the 3D world to meet with your friends, converse / play with them, and work with your office colleagues. You may also shop, with your friend, for groceries, food, dresses, appliances, etc. by looking, hearing, feeling, smelling, and touching the goods (no licking!) for sale.

You can go for a concert or on a bike tour with your partner. Your friends, the goods you shop, the places you visit could be located in the neighborhood or in another corner of the world; distance will never be a problem!

Apart from Meta and Facebook, we can also encounter other companies / platforms, their products, and services in the metaverse once everyone agrees on a set of technology standards to connect with each other.

The immersive technology will be a game changer in the field of education! It will enrich the learning experiences, improve understanding of the subject, offer immediate feedback to the participants, and increase retention of knowledge.

Whether the objective is to teach the medical students the intricacies of a complicated surgery or to instruct the dancers the most difficult steps and nuances of classical dance forms like Ballet or Kathakali, the immersive technology offers powerful tools to pull the students into a real or imagined world, enabling them to manipulate and interact with their environment.

In short, your living in the physical world will be seamlessly extended to the virtual world with the experiences as close to the reality as possible. Let us see whether Mark Zuckerberg will live up to this challenge and how soon!

After writing this post yesterday I came across this introduction to Metaverse by Mark. See how he passionately talks about his company's future; and our future too! This is a video of 1Hr 17 Mn. Better seen on a big screen.
