Brainless Advertising Strategy!

It sounds like an oxymoron - Brainless Advertising!

But I have come to the conclusion that some of the most intelligent people are using Artificial Intelligence, in the most stupid manner. When I watch a YouTube or Facebook video, I see advertisements popping up disrupting the flow of the report / story / music / movie that I am following. Naturally, my first priority is how to stop this intervention.

Of course you know that there is no way to cut it out, but that you have to endure it for 10 seconds or so. You also know that after the mandatory duration, a tiny button announcing 'Skip Ad' (see photo) will appear and consequently your concentration is not in watching the advert but in keenly spotting that button, so that as soon as it appears you can press and stop that annoying advert to resume the program.

In this process, I have absolutely no clue what that advert was about, nor do I care!

When I asked my wife Vasantha Unnikrishnan what she does when such annoying adverts pop up, she said she takes it as a welcome break to provide rest to her eyes, shuts her eyes, and switches her mind to what is to be done in the real world. And then she comes back to the video, presses the 'Skip Ad' button, and continues watching. She also said that often it is the same advert that comes up repeatedly and that it adds to the annoyance quotient!

Now coming back to the intelligent Google / Facebook staff, who use AI-based secret algorithm to decide what types of adverts you fall for, based on your personal likes and dislikes that you shared with the company - do they believe that people really watch these annoying adverts with pleasure? Worse than that, they run the potential risk that the resulting angry audience will make sure that they won't buy those irritating products ever!

Will Google, Facebook, and others listen to these observations and device a better advertising strategy, than this age-old and dumb approach?
